Section 01
Problem Statement
A site engineer receives a delivery of cement bags, a steel beam with an EPD QR sticker, or a bucket of fly-ash and wants to know the embodied carbon impact of that purchase on the spot. Paper EPDs, spreadsheets, and desktop LCA tools are too heavy. With only a phone, a worker should photograph or scan a material sticker, look up its carbon factor from an offline SQLite dataset, swap in lower-carbon alternatives, log waste in kg, see a running carbon-budget bar, and generate a "Net-Zero Material Passport" PDF — all during lunch break with no laptop.
Section 02
Solution Requirements
Barcode / QR / photo material lookup
Aim the camera at a QR on a bag, scan a 1D barcode, or use "Identify with camera" (ML Kit BarcodeScanner / ObjectDetector or TFLite MobileNet classifier) to resolve material type + carbon factor from an offline SQLite EPD database (~500 entries), showing kgCO2e per kg. NFC optional only if the phone already supports it.
Real-time embodied carbon calculator
User enters quantities (m³ of concrete, t of rebar, m² of insulation); the kgCO2e total updates every keystroke. A budget bar compares the project to ISO 14064 / GRIHA / LEED caps with a color-coded traffic light.
Swap-for-lower-carbon recommender
Each material has a "swaps" tab listing 3 alternatives (GGBS concrete, LC3 cement, CLT timber, etc.) showing CO2 delta %, cost delta %, strength delta % from the SQLite table, e.g. "swap to 50% GGBS → -35% CO2, +12% cost".
Waste logging with photo proof
Photograph a pile of off-cuts or a broken panel; TFLite segmentation (DeepLabV3 or MediaPipe image_segmentation adapted) identifies it as scrap; the worker enters estimated kg and the app deducts it from a waste budget, showing predicted saved CO2.
Water & dust proxy
A form captures curing method / dust suppression used and estimates m³/PM. A barometric pressure drop feeds a "rain risk → outdoor curing delay" warning.
Material Passport PDF export
One button generates a PDF (PdfDocument / Android PrintManager, no backend server) with project name, material list, per-line kgCO2e, alternatives used, scanned photo, and signature.
Offline-first architecture
After the first EPD-db sync (or bundled), the app runs entirely in airplane mode — no network required for any core flow.
Section 03
Expected Solution / Outcomes
- Video starts with a paper QR on a real bag of cement → tap scan → carbon number fills instantly.
- User enters "8 m³ OPC C30" → calculator shows 2.4t CO2e → swap to GGBS 50% → new 1.56t CO2e shown instantly.
- A real off-cut is photographed, 25kg logged, and the waste-saved bar moves.
- A passport PDF opens inside the same phone's file viewer.
- The whole demo runs for 5 seconds visibly in airplane mode.
Section 04
Technology & Hardware Constraints
Data: ICE 2.0 factor CSV (bundled), EPD PDF→CSV, waste factors CSV, local weather API, OSM.
Section 05
Scoring
Requirements Completeness
50
Each requirement (R-id) is worth 3–12 marks. A hard-coded or mocked claim earns 0 — only working code counts.
Presentation & Demo
50
3-slide pitch + video ≤ 7 min + live demo. Judges must understand the problem in ≤ 90 seconds.
Real-world Implementation & Feasibility
50
Would a PM, engineer, or worker install this with only a phone on Day 1 of the next project? Must work offline and cheaply. Field-trial videos prove real-environment execution (20+ pts of this score is the field video).
Innovation & Disruption
50
A novel fusion of phone sensors (e.g. IMU + camera + barometer = scaffold-instability detector) is rewarded over simple API-calling. Re-skinning an existing SaaS scores low.
Section 06
Bonus (+10)
Circular passport via phone NFC (if equipped): tap a printed sticker carrying a phone-generated ID via NfcAdapter → the passport shows on the worker's phone including a "return-by" date. No tags are added to the environment.
Section 07
Deliverables
| Item | Format |
|---|---|
| Video Demo | ≤ 7 min, YouTube/Vimeo unlisted link. Must open with the phone alone on a table (no external hardware). |
| Field Trial Videos | (a) Scan a real printed QR on cement/sand/box outdoors. (b) Photograph and log a real off-cut/scrap piece outdoors. Both must show GPS EXIF or live camera preview. |
| Demo Link | Android APK download link (installed on the reviewer's own phone) or a mobile-optimised web app URL. |
| GitHub | Clean repo, working build instructions, README with permissions and model licenses, .gitignore hides Firebase keys. |
| Pitch Deck | 3-slide PDF (Problem → Solution → Field-Proof & Impact). |
| Technical Brief | 2-page PDF: architecture diagram, phone-sensor map, tech stack, limitations, PRIVACY.md. |
Section 08
Field-Trial Requirements
- Real material scan outdoors with a printed QR.
- Real waste off-cut photographed and logged outdoors.
Section 09
Privacy Requirements
Any human face captured in a field video must be consented or blurred. A PRIVACY.md file is required in every repository.
